John Olexa
4-year term
I was born and raised in Torrington, Connecticut and educated in local schools, both public and parochial. I went on to learn the machine toolmaker trade. After serving 4 years active duty in the U.S. Coast Guard, I earned a Masters’ Degree in Vocational Technical Education from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU). For over 23 years, I instructed vocational and technical education to a diverse student population, including adolescents, adults, and foreign and U.S. military personnel. I presently hold a teacher certification in Manufacturing, Technology, and related subjects, as well as Vocational School Administration.
I am an active member of the VFW Niantic post, having served in the 410 Air Expeditionary Wing for the initial invasion of Iraq in 2003. I also am a Vietnam Era veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. Upon my return from Operation Iraqi Freedom, I took an early retirement from my position as a Connecticut Vocational Technical School Instructor and was employed full time as an Emergency Manager Supervisor with the Connecticut Air National Guard. This position required developing, instructing, and maintaining a program for a military installation’s Weapons of Mass Destruction defense and natural disaster mitigation.
For the past 3 years, I have lived in East Lyme to be closer to family, following a 10-year residence out of state. Now fully retired, I have been fly fishing, hunting, reading history, and traveling in my free time.
Given my experience, I have developed a definite philosophy towards education and would like to share my perspective as a member of the Board of Education. I support outcome-based education that prepares one for employment as a contributing citizen of the community and nation. An emphasis should be placed on core courses, the development of a strong work ethic, and the promotion of American values. Having been an educator, I believe that administrators should back teachers to the fullest extent possible in maintaining a disciplined and effective learning environment, and that teachers strive to be creative in presenting their subject matter to result in measurable outcomes.
If elected, I look forward to working with my fellow Board of Education members to improve our students’ educational experience and prepare them for successful futures. I hope you will support my candidacy.
